Everyone's talking about this "Occupy Wall Street" movement and how it's branching out to banks, states, and even freeways.
Can someone please explain to me exactly what the occupy movement is? What the hell are they occupying? Why are they occupying it?
From what I've been told, it's a bunch of folks blaming stock brokers on them not being able to find jobs in their field. Like a carpenter can't find carpentry work because most states have suspended home construction. What's stopping the carpenter from working at Lowe's or Home Depot or even finding some other type of work to bring in money for his family? Is it pride? Is it the belief that he shouldn't have to "lower" himself to that level?
I may be completely off base here, and if I am please tell me, but there is nothing wrong with working any job if you're supporting your family. If this is what the occupy movement really is, then I feel very sad for those folks involved.
They're not blaming stock brokers. They're blaming large corporations and their collusion with government, the way large corporations keep getting bigger tax breaks while many is being take away from schools and people who need it. How there are fewer jobs because big corporations run small companies into the ground. The way the middle class is disappearing and there's getting to be just a huge very low class and then a tiny very high eschalon. The way people like my husband work longer and longer hours for less and less money because of internal restructuring that corporations do. The way people our age who worked all their lives and contributed loads of money to what they thought was going to be their retirement only to have it stolen by clever businessmen. And, yes, the way there are fewer and fewer good jobs and more and more part time low wage jobs without benefits that don't allow people to buy houses and take care of their families.
ReplyDeleteLots of people don't seek wealth but do want to be able to live a relatively happy and peaceful life without want. I have seen that possibility for most people diminish greatly in my lifetime, and I see the Occupy movement as representing and standing up for all of us, even the people who don't approve of them.
I see. I'm glad that was explained!
ReplyDeleteIs camping out and the violence we see getting the right point across though?
I think the camping out is good to remind the people they're trying to reach that they aren't just going to forget and go away. Hadn't heard about violence except on the part of the police.
ReplyDeleteBut I know we shouldn't talk politics. Don't know why I did it. You give your response if you want, and no matter how wildly I disagree, I promise not to answer. :-)
